Debate as Presidency Cites BBNaija ₦150m Prize

Tinubu’s Super Falcons Rewards Ignite Debate as Presidency Cites BBNaija ₦150m Prize

Published: July 29, 2025 | By Nollywood Center.

President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to reward the Super Falcons following their triumphant campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has stirred a nationwide debate and one that transcends sports and delves into politics, economics, and national priorities....

While many Nigerians applauded the move as a fitting recognition of excellence, others questioned the timing, the nature of the rewards, and the rationale provided by the Presidency.....

A Grand Gesture or Political Optics?

At a special ceremony held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu conferred national honours of: Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each player and coach of the victorious Super Falcons squad...

In addition to the prestigious national honours, the President announced substantial rewards:

☆ $100,000 cash for each player

☆ $50,000 for each technical staff member

☆ A three-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Abuja for each team member...

The announcement was swiftly followed by a spirited defence from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Onanuga pushed back against criticism that the rewards were excessive or politically motivated....

“When you remember that Multichoice, the organiser of the BBNaija reality show, is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga wrote....

He further described the gesture as a celebration of “excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry, and the undying Nigerian spirit.”

Social Media Reacts: Mixed Feelings and Heated Opinions

Onanuga’s comparison to the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show ignited a firestorm on social media. Many Nigerians took to X to share their opinions, some of which are in support and others sharply critical....

Critics Raise Key Questions:

Why foreign currency?

“Why is he gifting them in dollars? The richest countries in the world won’t ever make such gifting to athletes who collect salaries,” tweeted @Wale_Abdul.

Economic insensitivity?

“I’m not against the gift, but that amount is too much for a country whose citizens are living in abject poverty, infrastructural decay, and insecurity. This wasn’t thoughtful from President Tinubu; it’s not a good way to buy favour,” said @Ezekwem_Franklin.

Flawed comparison?

“BBNaija is private money. Falcons played for the country. It’s not the same. The comparison doesn’t work,” argued @Official_dharmy.

“Why is it so hard for the government to do the right thing without comparing it to a TV show?” asked @SirDavidBent.

Supporters Applaud the President:

@Ghali_Ismael tweeted:

“Alhamdulillah Rabil Aalameen for HIS blessings upon us at all times and places. To say the least, I am very impressed with the way Mr. President rewarded the team.”

@IAm_Emma_Eze wrote:

“Let’s be fair, Tinubu’s gesture to the Super Falcons deserves applause. Some presidents ignore sports achievements entirely.”

@NenyeVibes noted:

“BBNaija gets private funding. Falcons represent national pride. Both deserve rewards, but one shouldn’t be used to justify the other.”

A Larger Conversation About Priorities

While the President’s gesture undeniably honours a moment of national pride, it has also sparked a deeper conversation about the value Nigeria places on sports, youth empowerment, and cultural identity....

Critics argue that in a country grappling with inflation, unemployment, and rising hardship, extravagant monetary rewards, especially in foreign currency may be perceived as tone-deaf....

Supporters, on the other hand, maintain that rewarding national heroes fosters morale and unity in a country often divided by politics and hardship.....

Ultimately, the debate reflects a broader public yearning for transparency, thoughtful governance, and genuine celebration of national achievement without politicisation or misplaced comparisons....

What’s your take? Was President Tinubu’s reward a fitting tribute or a political misstep?

Jos Family Christmas Festival 2025: When Street Culture Meets Holiday Magic

Jos Family Christmas Festival 2025: When Street Culture Meets Holiday Magic.

By Nollywood Center

Published July 25, 2025

Jos is making a bold statement this December and it’s loud, local, and unapologetically cultural.

The official unveiling of the 2025 Jos Family Christmas Festival happened on Thursday in the city’s heart at the prestigious Usuji Events center and if the energy at the event is anything to go by, this year’s edition is shaping up to be the most dynamic yet.

Not only were government officials, tourism leaders, and investors at the event, but so were the real storytellers of the streets: Authentic HMK, and a wave of top-tier J-Wood influencers, producers and a select few from the directors guild Plateau zone. Their presence wasn’t just symbolic... It was seismic!

This year’s festival is no longer just about celebration. It’s about reclaiming Plateau’s story with local creatives holding the mic.

● "This Festival Belongs to the People”

At the center of the unveiling, Hon. Chuwang Pwajok, General Manager of the Plateau State Tourism Corporation, spoke passionately about using the festival to drive tourism and empower the people.

“We’re deliberately starting early, engaging everyone from corporate sponsors to street creators to co-create something big. This festival belongs to the people.”

Pwajok also announced a broader plan to establish December as Plateau’s official tourism month, bolstered by major renovations at the Hill Station Hotel, Plateau Hotel, and Jos Wildlife Park with each being redeveloped through innovative public-private partnerships.

But beyond infrastructure was something deeper: an intentional move to recognize grassroots creativity as a driver of tourism confidence.

A Festival That’s Bigger, Bolder, and Bursting with Culture

Rume Ogane, CEO of Ecosystems Africa and lead consultant for the festival, unveiled the stacked lineup for 2025 and it’s nothing short of ambitious.

Here’s what’s coming:

■ The return of the iconic Hot Air Balloon Experience

■ A city-wide Christmas Float Parade, led by four themed bands:

● The Governor’s Band

● The Tourism Band

● The Local Government Band

● The House of Assembly Band

■ Deep collaborations with event planners, musicians, and visual artists

■ Full influencer coverage from street to screen.

“We’re building something Plateau can own, expand, and export. This isn’t just a holiday festival,;it’s an economic platform,” Ogane said.

He also revealed ongoing discussions to host the National Association of Tour Operators’ annual conference in Jos, a strategic move to boost both domestic and international foot traffic.

Influencers Aren’t Just Joining... They’re Leading.

What set this unveiling apart from previous years was the intentional inclusion of culture-shaping voices from the streets of Jos.

Known for their raw, authentic storytelling, Hoomsuk Street Visuals and Authentic HMK have long documented the soul of Jos from its music to its fashion to its defiant joy. Their involvement this year goes beyond attendance. They’re shaping the festival’s visual narrative as well.

J-Wood actors, filmmakers, directors and producers have also pledged to amplify the festival’s message through short films, behind-the-scenes coverage, and cultural content leading up to December.

In Plateau, storytelling isn’t just entertainment.. it’s tradition, resistance, and rebirth.

☆A Celebration of Resilience

Local leaders didn’t hold back their support. Hon. John Kyoro Christopher, Chairman of Jos North, spoke from the heart:

“Despite what the headlines sometimes say, Jos is alive. We weep, we rise, and we celebrate.”

His counterpart in Jos South, Hon. Patrick Silas Dung, echoed that sentiment:

When people come here and witness our culture, beauty, and people, they carry a different story back home. That’s the power of this festival.”

☆ December Belongs to Jos

The message from Thursday’s event that took place at the Usuji world events center was loud and clear: the 2025 Jos Family Christmas Festival is not just an event! It’s a reset.

From upgraded tourist infrastructure to influencer-driven coverage, from hot air balloons to Christmas floats, from government to the ghetto and the entertainment pieces are in place.

Jos is ready to show the world who she is: resilient, radiant, and real.

Planning your December getaway?

Make it Jos. Come for the lights. Stay for the culture and leave with a new story.

DECASIA Returns to Lagos: A Celebration of African Film Heritage

DECASIA Returns to Lagos: A Celebration of African Film Heritage

Lagos, July 14, 2025

DECASIA, Nigeria’s flagship heritage film festival, is set to return to Lagos for its highly anticipated 2025 edition. The festival, a collaborative effort between the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), Lagos Film Society, and several German partners including the Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art (Berlin), Deutsche Filminstitut and Filmmuseum (Frankfurt), Goethe University Frankfurt, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), and Goethe-Institut Lagos, will once again bring together creative minds from across the globe.

This year’s event will run from Sunday, July 27 to Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the Nigerian Film Corporation’s Lagos office in Ikoyi.

According to Dr. Ali Nuhu, Chief Executive Officer of the NFC, DECASIA 2025 promises to be more than just a film festival! It’s a cultural movement. The four-day gathering will unite filmmakers, archivists, historians, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts, all focused on preserving, rediscovering, and creatively re-imagining Africa’s cinematic heritage.

What to Expect at DECASIA 2025

Attendees can look forward to:

● Rare archival film screenings.

● Panel discussions on film archiving, preservation challenges, and national development.

● Networking sessions connecting cultural memory with Nigeria’s creative industries.

● Workshops on the evolving role of digital technologies in film archiving.

One of the key highlights will be the conversation around Nigeria’s draft National Film Archive Policy, with sessions designed to raise awareness about the critical need to protect and preserve Nigeria’s audio-visual heritage.

More Than a Festival—A Call to Action

Beyond screenings and discussions, DECASIA serves as a catalyst for deeper conversations about the role of archives in shaping the future of storytelling. The festival aims to:

● Foster global dialogue on film heritage and digital transformation.

● Strengthen ties between Nigeria’s National Film Video and Sound Archive (NFVSA), the National Film Institute (NFI), and the University of Jos’ Master’s Programme in Film Culture & Archiving Studies.

● Engage government agencies, private sector players, and content creators on the urgent need for audio-visual preservation and cultural memory management.

A Growing Legacy

First launched in Lagos in October 2019 as the 1st Berlin-Lagos Archival Film Festival, DECASIA has since grown into a binational event, alternating between Nigeria and Germany. The 2020 edition in Berlin, themed “Reclaiming History, Unveiling Memory”, further cemented its international relevance.

Now in 2025, DECASIA continues to offer Nigeria’s film community and the wider public a platform for:

● Culture and heritage protection

● Archival capacity building

● Film and cultural diplomacy

As Dr. Ali Nuhu emphasizes, DECASIA isn’t just about looking back—it’s about creating sustainable pathways for the future of Nigeria’s film culture.

NIGERIA--BRAZIL AUDIO-VISUAL DEAL; A BOLD STEP TOWARD GLOBAL FILM COLLABORATION

Nigeria–Brazil Audio-Visual Deal: A Bold Step Toward Global Film Collaboration

July 2, 2025 | Abuja, Nigeria

In a landmark move that signals stronger global ties in the creative space, Nigeria and Brazil have officially signed an audio-visual cooperation agreement, opening a new chapter for film investment, collaboration, and cultural exchange between both nations.

Speaking after the historic signing ceremony held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Dr. Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), hailed the agreement as “a leap forward for Nigeria’s presence in the global storytelling ecosystem.”

The ceremony was witnessed by Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima (GCON), and Brazil’s Vice President, Mr. Geraldo Alckmin, under the framework of the Nigeria–Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM).

( Fabiana Trindade, Secretary Finance National Agency for Cinema, Brazil... )

■ A Shared Cultural Tapestry

Dr. Nuhu highlighted that Nigeria and Brazil, two of the largest Black populations in the world share deep-rooted cultural identities in music, art, fashion, tourism, and, of course, cinema. These rich cultural similarities form a powerful foundation for audio-visual cooperation that resonates with global audiences...

“It’s a timely handshake that opens doors to transformative opportunities in content development, skills exchange, and film financing,” — Dr. Ali Nuhu.

■ What the Agreement Offers

Under the new pact, stakeholders in both countries can expect:

🎬 Co-production of films and documentaries...

🎥 Cross-border distribution and content exhibition...

🧠 Technical skills training and professional exchanges...

💰 Film financing support...

🗂️ Archiving and preservation of audio-visual materials...

🌍 Support for emerging talents...

🏆 Film festival and market development...

🔗 Industry promotion and networking...

Post-signing protocols are already underway, with the NFC and Brazil’s Agencia Nacional do Cinema (ANCINE) gearing up to implement the agreement through an operational handbook titled:

“Nigeria–Brazil Audio-Visual Cooperation Agreement: Procedure and Practice.”

( Post Agreement Signing Engagement between Nigeria and Brazil Delegation. )

■ Aligning With National Vision

The agreement supports Nigeria’s broader cultural diplomacy initiatives such as “Nigeria Everywhere” and “Nigeria: Destination 2030”, both launched by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy...

Dr. Nuhu emphasized that this development is not just symbolic but it’s strategic. It shows that government is responding to the contributions of Nigerian filmmakers by creating frameworks that encourage international collaboration, boost local capacity, and attract global investment...

He added that just like the already operational Nigeria–South Africa Audio-Visual Agreement, the NFC will ensure that creatives and institutions in Nigeria benefit fully from this new Brazil partnership...

■ Looking Ahead

This cooperation agreement reinforces Nigeria’s growing influence in the global film industry and brings new hope to producers, directors, actors, and technicians looking to scale their stories internationally...

“We are unlocking new markets, new audiences, and new opportunities for African storytelling to shine.” — Dr. Nuhu

Stay tuned for more updates on how this collaboration unfolds—and how it could shape the future of film across the Atlantic...
